Emerald of northern Aegean, with green and light blue colors, Thassos is a jewel for the Prefecture of Kavala. Morphologiacally, the perimeter of Thassos is partly rocky and abruptly. On the other hand, its sandy remain in the first choice of thousands of tourists. The mountains of the island are covered with rich forests and dense vegetation. Economically the island is supported by the agricultural products that are produced such as oil, olives and honey. The forests provide abundant timber from which becomes important exploitation. In the island exists also appreciable mining wealth that consists of iron, lead and manganese. In the marine region near Thassos were found appreciable layers of oil. Already from 1981 has begun its pumping according to conventions of Oil Municipal Enterprisel and foreigner companies.

Another sector of the island's economy is naturally the tourism. The island allocates very good hotel infrastructure and reasonable prices, while beautiful bars and taverns are ready to satisfy each gastronomic preference. Makryammos, Golden Beach, Golden Coast Paradise, Saltmarsh, Astris, Psili Ammos Potos, Peykari, Limenaria, Kallirachi, Maries, Prinos, Rachoni, some of them organized or distant and calm with easy access most, offer unique enjoyment and challenge for plunges in spotless waters. Some of the most appreciable settlements of island are the Municipality of Thassos, the community of Limenaria, Theologos, Kallirachii, Potamia, Panagia, Prinos, Maries, Rachoni. Settlements with special physiognomy near the better beaches.

The island allocates a lot of wonderful beaches, mainly in the Eastern coasts, it includes big sandy extents, good services for the tourists as well as isolated points in which somebody can escape from the crowds (on foot, by motor cycle or marine taxi). The most popular regions, have a lot of hotels, apartments with complete services, taverns and athletic activities.

The wooded hinterland of the island constitutes a paradise for those who love nature and has mountain ranges that lead to the most astonishing
landscapes preened with more than 1.000 species of wild flowers.

One of the better ways in order for someone to see all that the island provides is renting a motorcycle or a car. The coastal street of the island is in good condition and can be covered easily in one day. The internal streets lead to traditional mountainous villages, where life resembles it has not changed by no means for a lot of generations

The history of Thassos according to ancient deliveries begins with various Thracian races that first lived on the island. The name of island is said that it was given by the leader of Foinikes, Thassos, who leader of his soldiers had reached until there seeking Europe, which was kidnapped by Zeus. The great number of monuments witness all these and the
archaeological places reveal that in the island culture was evolved. More important, the old Harbour, the Ancient Market, the castle, the Citadel and the Ancient Theatre in Limenas.
